As a student wishing to pursue studies in the USA, you will need a valid student’s visa, which is dependent on the course you opt for, as well as your age.

F1 Student Visa
This Visa is granted to students to study English at an English language institute or at an accredited US college or University
J Exchange Visa

M Student Visa

In order to obtain a US student’s visa, you will have to furnish proof of proficiency in English, usually by passing a language test that assesses your communication skills.
To begin the visa application process, you must first have proof of acceptance to a US based college or university which is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). They will then provide you with Form I-20 which is a record of your information and will be stored in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database.
Documents Required For A US Student Visa:
- Passport that is valid for a minimum of 6 months beyond the period of stay applied for
- Form I-20, and proof of acceptance from a SEVP school
- SEVIS application fee payment
- Form DS-160 confirmation and non-immigrant visa application
- Photograph in the requested format and number
You might also be asked to furnish proof of sufficient funds or an undertaking from a financial sponsor, and evidence that you will leave the country after completion of your course. In some cases, the Embassy might also request for academic preparation documents including diplomas or certificates.
Online Application for Your Visa
The online application for a US student’s visa is done through the US Embassy and Consulates India website (https://in.usembassy.gov/visas/nonimmigrant-visas/)
The process can be started up to 120 days before the start of your course. Do keep in mind, that the application date is the date on which the fee is paid.
Once Your Visa Is Approved
In order to ensure your visa is not cancelled, you must fulfil the purpose for which it was issued. On arrival in the USA, immediately contact your assigned official at the institute.
While studying in the USA, be diligent with attending all lectures, and immediately inform your assigned official if you are facing any difficulties.
Should you need a programme extension, beyond the date mentioned on your Form I-20, feel free to approach your school official about the same. You must always full course of study each term, and nothing less, without the advice of your school official.
