Health and security in Ireland

Moving to a foreign country a daunting task as it is, settling and being acquainted requires time of its own. Non-EU/Non-EEA students, unlike their EU/EEA counterparts are not covered for free medical attention. As a part of the non-EU/non-EEA group, Indian students pursuing study abroad need to have a private health insurance – which is also a prerequisite for visa and immigration. Spending a night at a hospital can be heavy on the wallet and hence, it is advised to have a comprehensive medical insurance.

The Garda National Immigration Bureau requires the student to submit a poof of their health insurance while registering. Students can take care of private health insurance by themselves from their native country or can opt for insurance through a health insurance provider in Ireland.

Visa application, eligibility and requirement

A student as a part of the EU/EEA or Switzerland need not apply for a visa and have passage into Ireland without meeting the Border Control.  Non-EU/Non-EEA students, however, have to go through the process of visa application and would need to clear Border Control to be admitted into the country. Application for a visa is a two stage process – The online process and submission of documents.

To be eligible as an Indian student for a visa to study in Ireland requires acceptance by the Irish educational Institution. The course pursued for study in Ireland needs to feature on the List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP). This is because it is the responsibility of the ILEP to deem the course acceptable to international students. Another criterion for eligibility is that a student should have made the payment of fee towards the course.

Lists of required documents are to be submitted in English, as proof that the student meets the requirement for securing the visa. Documents in a language other than English or Irish need to be translated and notarized by an official translator. Documents submitted towards the visa process need to be in original form; copies are not to be provided unless specified.  It is advised that students apply for a visa at least three to four months prior to the start date of the course. Student visa fee for Ireland from Indian is INR 8500; this cost is exclusive of the service fee.
